Neurogenesis is a unique form of brain plasticity that is thought to be involved in essential processes such as learning and memory and play a critical role in the action of antidepressants. PsychoGenics has partnered with KineMed to provide their novel GC/MS based methodology for measuring neurogenesis which is significantly less time consuming and labor intensive but just as accurate as the classical BrdU-based methodology.
KineMed has developed a novel stable-isotope mass spectrometric method based on labeling with heavy water (2H2O). 2H incorporation into covalent C-H bonds of the deoxyribose moiety of purine deoxyribonucleotides in DNA is measured by gas chromatographic / mass spectrometric (GC/MS) analysis of gradient-purified neural progenitor cells.
